Cookiwiki:About

The purpose of this Wiki is to collect culinary recipes, and information about food, from all around the world. There are other wikis on recipes, such as the Wikibook on Cooking, and the question is, how does CookiWiki differ from these other projects? There are two differences: one of style, one of infrastructure.

The difference in style is that CookiWiki aims at being a place for people that are passionate about food. When writing a recipe, please don't hesitate to put in the small details about the tricks you use, cultural references, and other observations that help recipes become live. This does not aim at being a dry encyclopedia, but rather, a repository of experience and advice.

The difference in infrastructure lies in the fact that CookiWiki uses WikiTrust, a wiki extension that enables to track text origin, author, and trust. If you contribute, everyone will be able to see your work! To see the system in action, click on the check text tab.

  • The author of a word is displayed in a pop-up box when you hover over the word. The algorithms that compute authorship are robust to cut-and-paste, deletion-and-reinsertion, and other more complex text evolutions.
  • The origin of a word is displayed when you click on it: you are redirected to the diff showing where the word was first introduced in the article.
  • The trust of a word is displayed via text background coloring.

We require people to register before editing both as a mild measure to combat spam, and to allow for a more meaningful tracking of text authorship.
